As a completely crazy fan of Jack Kerouac´s way of life, this post must have this title 😉 During the last days I was engaged in a fascinating learning journey to myself. Yeah, I know, as usual 😉 But this time it was different because I shared the learning experience with passionate young entrepreneurs and dreamers. Yeah, I know, as usual 😉 But this time I did it inside a bus without Wi-Fi moving to Paris. Oh yeah!!! 😉 You all know that the situation in Spain is not the best for dreamers, in fact probably some of you think it´s the worst in Europe. But 23 mad people thought otherwise when they embarked on a bus that would travel from Barcelona to Paris visiting Valencia, Madrid, Santander, Bilbao and Donosti to share their experience and real projects with other european dreamers. StartupBus is added now to my disruptive learning experiences.
StartupBus experience started a couple years ago in US and now becomes reality in Europe. The crazy dream of Elias Bizannes became true and it was the first succesful model to all buspreneurs. Since more than 30 cities worldwide routes begin to participate in various international competitions are organized on a continental match. This year, two brothers in Spain have managed all the the needs to introduce a route from our country to participate in European competition to be held on December 2012.
During this experience a group of cameras has filmed the entire process to make a documentary that for many will serve to explain what happened inside. The level inside the spanish bus was high in terms of enthusiasm and skills of all members. My first contact occurred in Madrid when we attended several master classes before departing. Once inside the bus I wanted to introduce myself and share some concerns with the crazy brothers Alvarez and company. During the first few hours I knowed the ideas and projects of all buspreneurs and I decided to help in business and strategy in the final projects. During the trip I was reporting the whole experience because I was interested to know also how the Viking Bus, the Oxford Bus and the French Bus were living their respective journeys. We had a major problem leaving Madrid with the Wi-Fi connection but we convert that problem into an opportunity relating us quickly and dynamically inside without any communication barrier, like building a little P2P culture inside ;)) I think with the internet and other facilities we may not lived the experience as intensely as we lived it. I remembered the first day allways sharing ideas and impressions, prototyping from scratch, visiting and talking with all the bus. On arrival at Donosti, I saw some of my brothers minners and shared a funny night with them before going to sleep (thanks, Ñaki!!!)
Great moments during the trip with the Eiffel Tower behind and in several cities with Carlos, Jaume, Aymar, Joel, Joan, Samantha, Tere, Chris, my timisister Ane, Liher, great Zaldua, Pedro, Pascual, Bruno, Lucas, Óscar,…
During the trip we met innovation and coworking centers and met interesting people. Upon arrival in Paris, the Spanish detachment competed with other buses in the semifinals for a chair in the final. No luck for two Spanish projects but The Best DJ is went directly to the final after a great pitch. The other two projects were in the playoffs competing with more than 10 projects for final access to Microsoft day before LeWeb Conference.
I liked seeing already in the semifinal that most every team proposals were aimed at solutions for problems related with employment, collaborative management, user empowerment, crowd and geolocation. With a real project preparing the final we only have one inmediate goal: put the other two projects in the final. After a competitive struggle the jury appreciated spanish Beat Goliat as a real and well-crafted proposal to change the world but without an acceptable pitch and comunication. This fact prevailed over the high quality of communication proved by the great team of Qbeeco, one of my favourites pitchs in all the process (including the final) as I recognized to his team. At the last moment the spanish JobSquare team decided to leave the competition so… at the end two projects of StartupBus Spain were in the final competing with the other 7 startups, becoming mad in the taxi to Microsoft (Dani, thank goodness you’re alive and that Paris does not have you as Hangover Part II in Bangkok ;).
After the high voltage revolution we closed the experience with a party in Paris with all buspreneurs gathered (french, vikings, spaniards, germans and english entrepreneurs). Spaniards gave everything in all senses and emptied several bottles of gin before boarding the bus. Undoubtedly one of the highlights was sharing lessons learned on the journey back to Barcelona inside the bus in the early hours of … ok I lost all references, I don´t remember when it was… aftermath of several happy days without sleep ;)) I proposed to share what we all have learned in the pure style of my loved Team Academy community 😉 When we arrived to Barcelona, a excited bus driver told us the story of his son, an engineer who had to emigrate for a better life to other country. The driver said: I wish you the best luck in the world, you have to take the country forward. You are completely admirable as the only future that we can have so work hard and thank you for the attitude you show me during these days. As old as I am, I have learned much from you. Incredible words to close an incredible journey, don´t you think??
My feedback is very positive after millions of chips consumed, and other fast food like sandwiches, chocolates, biscuits…; after sleeping on the floor, being cold, having a broken back at the mornings… I lived with wonderful people and learned a lot of you trying to give the best of me. I hope I have covered all your expectations, buspreneurs. A big hug and the best luck for you.

In a later post I will talk about my adventure in StartupBus Europe, but now I want to share my alternative defense of the Beat Goliath project with the StartupBus community. Beat Goliat was one of the final projects in the competition and I want to Thank all my buspreneurs teammates for everything they learned and what they taught me building this project. If I had to defend or explain Beat Goliat, I will say something like this…:
Sorry jury, sorry Elias, but life on earth is not Silicon Valley. Although Silicon Valley may be a shared reference for many, the reality of the world is extremely more complex than a great ecosystem of entrepreneurship and agile culture. It´s allways more complex than a city, more complex than a citizen or a user. And that’s the reason because San Francisco has one of the highest levels of homeless people in a western city while be the innovation center of our world . Every day I get up in the morning and every night at bedtime, I realize these complexities. Today I´m going to tell you a proposal to improve, help and encourage people to fight against these complexities wherever they live.
When I think what is the most important argument to live, I allways think on my grandfather. Not all the grandfathers of spanish people were bullfighters and not all the grandmothers were flamenco dancers, but of course this was my case at least in half. Why my grandfather went day by day to the bullring to fight against one of the most powrful animals in the earth? This question has been with me all my life and probably today, after this learning experience, I have an answer. He went there, to the sand, because my family was hungry in spanish civil war but Why he went there day by day in one of the most richful periods of spanish history before that? He was playing with his live, you know? Maybe he could choose another employement but he didn´t. I think the answer is a mix of passion and social recognition.
When we leave our confort zone, we can grow up as fast as we want. Because there is no barriers in the land of the personal development. But what about sharing a social development? Many of the heros we have here today have the world PASSION in their foreheads. We are all talking today the same language presentation after presentation. The jury is tired of hearing the same words: geolocation, mobility and crowd. And that´s happen because a reason. It´s not about Barack Obama, Angela Merckel or Mariano Rajoy. Of course is not about the last one 😉 But future and life on earth is about YOU. Concepts like family, respect, commitment, peace or angry birds depend on you. Neither fucking Google nor Microsoft are going to change the world. Don´t expect that in your chairs right now, buddies. They know it because they are playing anothe league, another division. When I studied free software communities I learned one thing: as my grandfather, we need social recognition and support. But first we need to talk in the same level to the brands and corporations. We couldn´t do this till the moment before you entered in this auditorium. But now…
I want to introduce you Beat Goliat, the speaker of the crowds to build a better and a real user-centered brands and services by a new concept: social complain. You are not crazy enough if you think that you can change the world only with a single complain. Do it social, do it with others, beat your own Goliat with others Davids. We are going to empower the user while brands are going to improve their services. We hack the system to make it more human and real. Whith this idea users have a voice and the brands have a real-time connection with user needs through hard feedback. We commerce with this big data and we build strong campaigns to talk with corporations in their level. Because we can use the market to humanize the market. And this is Beat Goliat, a shared dream for all. Thank you so much for your attention and keep on rocking!

Today I decided write to the white house in order to change the world. If you visit the white house website, you can see that you have only 2,500 characters to communicate your idea to the most powerfull and influential institution in the world. So I simply though “Let´s do it”. This is what I wrote:
I have a dream that haunts me. I was travelling around the world during the last year knowing interesting and amazing overcoming histories and working with team working models to solve problems. Any kind of them. I have to confess that after all I live, beyond my experience, I am only a 30 years young. I´m just a person living as I were alive. Like the President. Deeply, intensely loving my loved ones and trying others to love me. But now only one question bothers me. During this travel, we only work with post-its, these small slips were the only resource we had in most of the places. And we came up with amazing ideas for change!! So my question was: Can we solve the problems of the world only with post-its?
I really think so. Because most problems you have in the international sand are related with people and teams. All of us we are only human beings and we understand the other problems knowing that we are only people, be President of the United States or a factory worker in Delhi. My dream, the dream that I am able to lead, is to build a community of facilitators not to solve the problems but to help local teams to solve each problem by themselves. The only thing I need to make my dream come true is one day with President Obama. My idea is to explain all the experience later with a sentence like this: “Ok, ok, I know it´s only the President of the United States, but imagine it was the most powerful person in the world to change the world every day. Imagine it was you.”
It´s only one day in the life of one man to pose a simple idea that can improve the all world. I know I’m a dreamer, but all we have was dreamed by others before us. I have no money for the trip, i´m just warning 😉 Thank you

Poder vivir en construcción, asumir que no se es perfecto o que la única forma de serlo es no serlo y vivir en consecuencia, podría ser un gran comienzo. Como personas y como comunidad. En España lo tenemos fácil, la burbuja de la construcción y los continuos carteles de obras han sentado una buena base para interiorizar esta metáfora.
Algo ha cambiado de forma radical en mi vida desde que modifiqué mi relación con los entornos tradicionales de trabajo. Se trata de la extraordinaria capacidad que se desarrolla en los nuevos entornos que frecuento para generar de forma espontánea conexiones que parecerían improbables. Precisamente una de las propuestas de transición hacia estos nuevos modelos que me parece más coherente es Conexiones Improbables, un proyecto que ya cuenta con varios años de rodaje y que todos los que nos dedicamos a transformación real conocemos en algún u otro momento. Básicamente lo que ofrecen es una propuesta para acometer una de las bases que se promueve desde MLab, y que en concreto la genial Polly Labarre siempre ha defendido desde hace años: eliminar las barreras dentro/fuera en las organizaciones. Los chicos de Conexiones se dedican a insuflar el virus de la hibridación en los equipos de las organizaciones y a establecer encuentros entre mentes inquietas (artistas/pensadores) y organizaciones (PYMES, administraciones o grandes organizaciones). Ellos han hecho suyo algo que siempre defendemos desde la iniciativa: trabajar desde el conocimiento compartido sobre la realidad de cada entorno.
Pues bien, en Izada, uno de los entornos en los que estoy desarrollando y compartiendo valor, me he encontrado con Sergio Arranz de enProceso, una cooperativa enfocada a educación social y coaching. Ahora mismo mientras escribo estas líneas estoy hablando con él sobre el número Dunbar, y descubriendo el umbral de rebeldía formulado por Juan Urrutia en Aburrimiento, rebeldía y ciberturbas: una aproximación a la economía desmarcada. 😉 Lo cierto es que el equipo de enProceso está realizando un magnífico trabajo de coaching comunitario en el entorno rural. Sergio tiene amplia experiencia trabajando lo que él denomina “espacios de diversificación para generar vínculos”. Su artículo El trueque comunitario. Una experiencia de trabajo comunitario con infancia marginada y sus familias en Bogotá, Colombia es realmente fascinante. Desde la perspectiva de la drogodepencia, Sergio ha trabajado el concepto de vulnerabilidad relacional y realizado numerosas intervenciones de carácter social. Su colaboración con el Programa de Prevención e Inserción Social de la Asociación de Padres de Drogodependientes, ASPAD, ubicada en el barrio de la Elipa Madrid) representa desde mi punto de vista un impecable planteamiento metodológico que aborda el trabajo con vínculos débiles, la motivación y el acompañamiento tecnológico a partir de los modelos de entrevista motivacional (Miller y Rollnick,1999) y rueda del cambio (Prochasca y Diclemente, 1982). La gran mayoría de las reflexiones que Sergio realiza en este artículo sobre su trabajo serían perfectamente aplicables a cualquier ámbito organizativo en el sector privado. Destaco algunos puntos que veo especialmente valiosos dentro de este trabajo para aplicar en la generación de nuevos modelos de relaciones e identidad:
El problema de déficit de la red personal con sus consecuencias;
La determinación y diseño de redes en torno a estrategias de acercamiento que faciliten la integración;
La gestión de intereses y expectativas dentro del grupo
La previa contextualización real de las personas como base de trabajo para una generación funcional de grupos
El fomento de la autoeficacia (hacer consciente a la persona de su poder para cambiar) a través de técnicas no invasivas
La identificación de brokers relacionales o personas que enriquecen y dan acceso a nuevas redes más heterogéneas
El trabajo desde el consenso y la empatía
La gestión del estigma (os recomiendo especialmente que leáis esta parte)
Una estructuración sencilla, directa y fácilmente comprensible
Muchos de los valores que comparte Sergio a diario están hermanado con muchas iniciativas y colectivos con los que me encuentro en una exploración continua. El trabajo de Simbyosi, un vivero colaborativo para proyectos socioculturales y un generador de contenidos culturales y sociales para crear historias de marca, está estrechamente enmarcado a nivel conceptual con la propuesta colaborativa. enProceso realiza un trabajo de base y comunitario intensivo y Simbyosi es, a mi modo de entender, un escaparate de lo que está pasando en la sociedad. Coincidí hace poco con Luis Tamayo, miembro del equipo de Simbyosi, en un ThinkCommons y a partir de ahí conocí su labor.
Desde la iniciativa vorpalina consideramos que estar en contacto con movimientos e iniciativas culturas de base que aborden los nuevos modelos de relaciones, es básico para la consecución de nuestro reto. La mayor parte de organizaciones, colectivos e iniciativas que conocemos aportan un gran valor a lo que somos, nos construyen y tejen a nuestro alrededor esa gran malla de la que siempre hablamos. En su artículo Los grados de la implicación, los chicos de Simbyosi exponen claramente lo que consideran como Ayudar, Participar y Colaborar y sin duda es un baremo que considero completamente válido y que comparten muchos proyectos que estamos levantando diferentes agentes de cambio en toda España. Ellos hablan del auge de la cultura colaborativa y la conciencia social, y de una era bastarda en la que diferentes disciplinas y aproximaciones se cruzan y generan nuevos enfoques útiles para abordar con ciertas garantías procesos de transición real. En la BIO de Cristobal Suárez se puede leer “la educación no encierra un tesoro, lo abre”. Sus artículos en Educación y virtualidad dan testimonio de que esta actitud de aprendizaje continuo es una de las pocas herramientas demostradamente exitosas que nos ayudarán a salir del hoyo.

Uno de los locos emprendedores que tienen llaves de mi casa ha pasado el día en ella trabajando. Al llegar tras toda la mañana fuera, me encuentro un post-it encima de una bolsa de plátanos en la mesa del salón.

Hoy tengo una nueva teoría sobre todas las cosas. Sí, sobre todas. Te haya dejado tu pareja o hayas tenido un grave accidente, suspendas ese exámen o te echen del trabajo, sufras una enfermedad mortal o tu ser querido haya fallecido. Es válida en cualquier momento de la historia de la Humanidad. Revoluciones, conflictos, descubrimientos o batallas. También es válida para cualquier persona. De cualquier nacionalidad o color. Sirve para cualquier momento de la vida. Seas niño, joven o anciano. Vivas ayer, hoy o mañana. Mi teoría de hoy dice algo como esto:
Fabricamos héroes a partir de un solo momento. Levantamos monumentos en su gloria porque una vez se alzaron e hicieron alzarse a otras personas. Pero todos ignoramos la heroicidad cercana, la interna, aquella que nos ha esculpido. Cuando alguien se une a la iniciativa siempre le pregunto dos cosas: ¿cuantas veces te han golpeado? y ¿cuantas veces has seguido hacia delante?. Cuanto mayores son ambas cifras y cuanto más coinciden, más alineada está esa persona con la iniciativa. Es indiferente si actualmente esa persona es un mendigo, un presidente de una gran empresa, un cirujano, una deportista profesional o un payaso. Porque mi teoría es que cada uno de nosotros es un increíble monumento de sí mismo. Somos la celebración de toda nuestra vida, el resultado de seguir hacia delante tras cada uno de los golpes. Si lo pensáramos, podríamos llegar a ser ese ejemplo que tanto hemos buscado fuera. Pero a menudo no valoramos ni cuidamos nuestro monumento porque convivimos con él todos los días. Está en continuo movimiento y parece que no tenemos tiempo para contemplarlo. Sin embargo a veces nos damos cuenta de que existe, Entonces, en contados momentos, nos sentimos grandes. Y esas veces casi siempre otros nos contemplan.
Me encantaría escribir un bonito artículo sobre mi teoría que hablara de superación, de encajar los golpes y de seguir hacia delante, de la importancia de sonreír y de llorar a tiempo. Pero hay discursos e historias reales que tal vez sean algo más prácticas 😉
Nuestro amigo Rocky lo sabe:
“No te lo vas a creer pero cabías en la palma de mi mano. Te levantaba en mis manos y le decía a tu madre: “Este niño será el mejor chico del mundo, será mejor que cualquier persona que haya conocido”. Creciste y fue maravilloso observarte cada día, fue un verdadero privilegio. Llegado el momento te convertiste en un hombre y lo aceptaste. Pero en algún lugar del camino, cambiaste. Dejaste de ser tu mismo. Permitiste que las personas te apuntaran con su dedo en tu cara y te dijeran que no eras bueno. Y cuando las cosas se pusieron feas, comenzaste a buscar algo a que culpar, como una gran sombra.
Permíteme decirte algo que ya sabes. El mundo no es todo sol y arcoiris. Es un lugar muy cruel y desagradable y no importa cuan duro seas, te golpeará hasta dejarte de rodillas y te mantendrá permanentemente sometido si se lo permites. Ni tú ni yo ni nadie va a golpear tan duro como la vida. Pero no se trata de lo duro que puedes golpear, se trata de lo duro que son los golpes que puedes recibir mientras continuas avanzando, de cuanto puedes soportar y continuar hacia adelante.
Así es como lo hacen los ganadores. Ahora, si sabes lo que vales, entonces ve afuera y consigue lo que mereces. Pero tienes que estar dispuesto a recibir los golpes y no apuntar con tu dedo diciendo que no estás donde querías estar por culpa ni de él ni de ella ni de nadie. Los cobardes hacen eso y tu no eres un cobarde, eres mejor que eso. Siempre te amaré sin importar lo que pase. Eres mi hijo, eres mi sangre. Tú eres la mejor cosa de mi vida. Pero hasta que no comiences a creer en ti mismo, no tendrás una vida.“
Si aplicaran ese discurso a cualquier persona o momento de la Historia, ¿acaso no serviría? Porque lo realmente importante -que nadie te engañe- nunca cambia. La base de todo cuanto importa, permanece. Esto es aplicable a la vida, a los negocios y a todo cuanto ocupa nuestro tiempo. Lo hablaba con alguien hace poco: Nadie que haya sufrido mucho o que haya tenido que replantearse su vida te dirá que lo importante es el dinero. Aunque lo necesite para vivir, jamás oirás que tras ese grave accidente de tráfico o tras estar al borde la muerte, se dio cuenta de que lo único que importa es el dinero. Nadie. Nunca. Creo que es por algo.
Y es algo que también sabe una persona admirable. Muchos de los que nos dedicamos y apostamos por el cambio, conocemos y utilizamos el ejemplo de la historia de Nick James Vujicic, que fundó a los 17 años la iniciativa Life without limbs, una plataforma de superación realmente admirable. Nick no posee brazos ni piernas, no deja de sonreír nunca y ha dedicado su lucha a transformar las vidas de los otros. Y de hecho así consta en el listado de Transformed lives que la gente le dedica agradeciendo su labor. Adolescentes que encuentran su camino en la vida, adultos que reorientan su carrera tras escucharle, jóvenes que se inspiran en su ejemplo,… la lista es amplia. Nick se ha comprometido por entero a su causa y nos ha dejado momentos que son una lección de vida como este:
